Abstract

Objectives: To explore the effect of adenotonsillectomy on mean platelet volume (MPV) lev
els and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) values in children with obstructive sleep apnea
syndrome (OSAS).
Subjects and Methods: In total, 127 children (69 males, 58 females; average age 10.20±8.96
years; range, 5-18 years) who underwent adenotonsillectomy with a diagnosis of OSAS were
included in the study. Pre-operative MPV levels and NLR values were compared with measure
ments in the post-operative third month. A p-value <0.05 was considered to reflect statistical
significance.
Results: Mean pre-operative MPV values were 8.12±1.28 femtoliters (fL) and mean post-op
erative MPV values were 7.96±1.01 fL, respectively. Post-operative MPV values were signifi
cantly lower than pre-operative measurements (p=0,028, p<0.05). Mean pre-operative NLR
levels were 1.46±0.82 and post-operative NLR values were 1.42±1.01, respectively. Post-oper
ative NLR values were significantly lower than pre-operative NLR values (p=0.032, p<0.05).
Conclusion: We observed statistically significant lower MPV levels and NLR values after ad
enotonsillectomy in children with OSAS. Future randomized studies should explore the rela
tionship between the MPV levels, NLR values and parameters in polysomnography in larger
numbers of patients with OSAS.
