The Industry Impact Awards at Digital University Foundation recognize research that has demonstrated meaningful application beyond the academic environment — evidenced translation of research into industrial, technological, professional, economic, environmental, or societal practice.

What Constitutes Impact?

Adoption of research by an organization or industry, implementation of a research-derived process or technology, commercialized products or services, licensing or documented technology transfer, patents accompanied by evidence of practical application, and documented organizational or sector-level change. Research commercialization is only one pathway — valuable non-commercial applications may also qualify.

Assessing Real-World Impact

Because impact differs substantially across disciplines, DUF does not use a single universal metric. Nominees submit an impact evidence portfolio containing appropriate documentation. Where practicable, significant claims are independently verified.

Assessment

The selection committee considers significance of the problem addressed, strength of evidence, scale and duration of implementation, and sustainability of impact. Industry funding or commercial value alone does not establish research impact.
